HS JMG Certification

Picture
Keep your logs current!
You should have two paper logs to keep up for certification -
One is your Certification Log sheet, where you write in EVERY activity that counts toward certification.  This keeps track of your service and leadership hours.
The second is the Class Topics List, a checklist for all the educational class topics you need to cover to earn HS MG certification.

Keep both of these log sheets in your binder and bring to every meeting.
Keeping your logs current is pretty important.  Get your Certification Log and Class List from your adult leader at the next meeting.

Log One - write down every activity, the time you took to do it, and if it was an Educational class, Service project or Leadership activity.  Total hours for Educational classes are not necessary for HS MG certification, but might help you with awards.

Log Two - each class you attend should fit somewhere on the list of class subjects.  IF you attend all meetings (not counting parties) of the HS MG, you should be able to check off all of these topics in a two-year period.  If you miss a topic, you can make it up the next year or by taking it somewhere else.  Write down where you took that class and the date, and present that to your MG leader.

In order to earn a HS MG Certification you will need to collect 20 hours of Service, 4 Leadership Projects and cover all the listed Educational topics:
  - Basic Botany - inc. plant anatomy, plant physiology & requirements, taxonomy
  - Soils/water - inc. soil composition, garden requirements, soil testing, composting, water/soil/plant relationships
  - Food gardening - inc. garden planning, building beds, soil-less gardening, maintenance, propagation, berries & fruit trees
  - Ornamentals/trees - inc. landscaping, right plant, right place, planting trees & shrubs, herbaceous ornamentals, propagation
  - Specialized gardening - inc. wildlife, natives, invasives, lawns & alternatives, disease & pest control, organic techniques

Service hours can be counted for any volunteer activity that aids another person or group in some plant-related way.  Some examples:  food bank, giving Teaching Patch tours, 4H, KSB, county fair horticulture areas, yard work for a needy neighbor (paid jobs or chores at home do not count!)

Leadership hours can be counted if you take charge of some activity, plan it and work it.  Some examples:  helping with younger JMG clubs if you are leading an activity; taking charge of a Teaching Patch bed; presenting a program topic at our class or another place; planning a field trip for our club.

This is a list of the events since we started the High School club.  Note that some are just fun events, or educational events that don't necessarily belong to any of the certification subjects.  So those hours are not counted toward certification, but can be counted toward total hours for 4H or other awards.  Log ONLY those you attended!
